Often known as the "quiet little corner of Tampa Bay," Citrus Park is steadily evolving. Once a city comprised mainly of dirt roads and fields of orange groves, Citrus Park is now proud to be recognized as an established gateway community. Shopping malls, business centers, and residential neighborhoods exist outside the hustle and bustle of downtown Tampa Bay, Florida, but remain easily accessible via the Veterans Expressway toll road.

Citrus Park also houses numerous local attractions. As of 2004, Citrus Park became "home" to J. Fred Muggs, the famous chimpanzee that lives in the care of Gerald Preis, son of trainer Carmine "Bud" Mennella. Another popular attraction is Big Cat Rescue, which is a non-profit sanctuary for large cats that is open to the public. Formerly known as Wildlife On Easy Street this corporation continues to successfully run the world's largest big cat sanctuary in Tampa, Florida. Big Cat Rescue houses a wide assortment of cats within the sanctuary, which include: tigers, lions, leopards, cougars, bobcats, lynx, ocelots, servals, caracals, and many others. Public tours are offered several times each week and special events take place from time to time. The sanctuary is located on Easy St. near the Citrus Park Mall on the Northwest side of Tampa.
